Industrial Revolution

Here´s the reading guide we discussed last Friday.

Hobsbawn, E. Chapter 2: “The Industrial Revolution” in The Age of Revolution (1789- 1848). New York: Vintage 1996

1. Explain Hobsbawm’s periodization (choice of dates) for the Age of Revolution.

2. How does Hobsbawm define the term industrial Revolution? When was the term coined? Why then and not before?

3. As every major historical event the Industrial Revolution was produced by a number of forces of different nature that were present in Britain in the late 18th century. Discuss the role the following issues played in the Industrial Revolution:
Agricultural Revolution – Colonial expansion – International trade – Scientific development – economic policies – sources of energy – political conditions.

4. Hobsbawm states that “cotton was the first industry to be revolutionized” (1996: 37). Find out about the inventions that revolutionized the textile industry and design a chart to organize the information collected.

5. Refer to the social consequences of the Industrial Revolution. Explain why the transition to the new economy brought about sadness and dissatisfaction and how the working classes reacted to the social and economic changes.
